The
Health and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Committee provides effective
leadership to promote, protect and enhance the health and safety
of the residents of York Region. This is accomplished through a
wide range of health-related mandatory programs and services provided
by the Health Services Department, including land ambulance emergency
medical services, long term care and seniors programs, and community
public health programs.

Successfully coordinated the Rapid Risk Factor
Surveillance System for the fifth consecutive year, including
monthly interviews with a random sample of 100 York Region adults
to gather information to help make data-based health programming

Provided information, education and support to
38,932 callers to the Health Connection toll-free health telephone
information line and enhanced customer service by integrating
the Sexual Health Line within its operations |

program, with 65 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) currently

employees now trained on how to help increase survival rates
from sudden cardiac arrest |

Hosted a Chemical, Biological, Radiological and
Nuclear (CBRN) conference in February 2005 for all emergency

to the Day Centre |

Program enhancements included the addition of
11 convalescent care beds at the Newmarket Health Centre, the
construction of an additional program room at the Maple Health
