The Health and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Committee provides effective leadership to promote, protect and enhance the health and safety of the residents of York Region. This is accomplished through a wide range of health-related mandatory programs and services provided by the Health Services Department, including land ambulance emergency medical services, long term care and seniors programs, and community public health programs.

public health
GOAL: Protect and promote the health of those who live, work and go to school in York Region.
achievements:
500 student peer leaders led over 4,000 elementary school students in daily exercise through the Fitness Ambassador program
419 families participated in the Healthy Babies Healthy Children high-risk home visiting program
Over 690,000 community members learned about the dangers of marijuana and driving, in partnership with York Regional Police

Reduced the risk of exposure to West Nile Virus by treating over 77,000
catch basins throughout York Region with larvicide four times during the mosquito season

Decreased vendors selling tobacco to young people from 32 per cent to less than 10 per cent at the end of 2005 as a result of enhanced enforcement

Completed 12,163 food premise inspections through the food safety program, an increase of 774 inspections over 2004

Enhanced breastfeeding support services, resulting in a 27 per cent increase in the number of client visits in 2005 and a 90 per cent client satisfaction rate

Offered dental screening to 59,802 children to identify individuals in urgent need of dental treatment

Presented a health fair for the Chinese community, offering information on health programs and services to Chinese-speaking residents

54 per cent more flu shots were administered through community immunization clinics over last season


health information and planning
GOAL: Provide accurate, timely and comprehensive information about the health of York Region residents.
achievements:
Released the Focus on Our Environment: State of the Environment Report 2005 jointly with the Planning and Development Services Department, providing a thorough assessment of the Region’s natural environment and recommendations to preserve a natural legacy for the future
Successfully coordinated the Rapid Risk Factor Surveillance System for the fifth consecutive year, including monthly interviews with a random sample of 100 York Region adults to gather information to help make data-based health programming decisions
Provided information, education and support to 38,932 callers to the Health Connection toll-free health telephone information line and enhanced customer service by integrating the Sexual Health Line within its operations

emergency medical services
GOAL: Support safe and secure communities in York Region through the provision of high-quality emergency medical services.
achievements:
Opened the new Vaughan-Racco Parkway Paramedic Response Station, one of 19 stations strategically located throughout the Region
Expanded the Heart Alive public access defibrillation program, with 65 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) currently installed at 28 York Region facilities and more than 400 Regional employees now trained on how to help increase survival rates from sudden cardiac arrest
Hosted a Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) conference in February 2005 for all emergency services and public health leaders in Ontario, a groundbreaking event sponsored by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care

long term care and seniors
GOAL: Offer quality programs which promote the health, well being and independence of seniors and adults requiring long term care services.
achievements:
Received excellent Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care compliance reviews for the Newmarket Health Centre and the Maple Health Centre
95 per cent of clients and families rated our two long term care facilities with a good to excellent client satisfaction rating, with the same rating given by 98 per cent of clients to the Community Programs and 100 per cent of clients to the Day Centre
Program enhancements included the addition of 11 convalescent care beds at the Newmarket Health Centre, the construction of an additional program room at the Maple Health Centre and the installation of ceiling lifts
