  Health and Emergency Medical Services  
   
 

The Health and Emergency Medical Services Committee provides
effective leadership to promote, protect and enhance the health
and safety of the people of York Region. This is accomplished through
a wide range of health-related programs and services provided by the
Health Services Department, including land ambulance emergency
medical services, long term care and seniors programs and community
public health programs.


public health

Goal: To keep the people of York Region healthy through health promotion, health protection and disease prevention activities
Achievements:
Held immunization clinics, where 8,383 Grade 7 students completed their hepatitis B series of injections, 9,868 students were immunized against meningitis and 13,007 York Region residents received the influenza vaccine
Reduced the risk of exposure to West Nile virus by treating approximately 77,000 catch basins with larvicide four times during the mosquito season
Implemented the Smoke-Free Ontario Act which made all workplaces and public places 100% smoke free

Completed 13,942 food premise inspections, an increase of 238 inspections over 2005

Provided dental screening to 72,159 children to identify those who had urgent dental conditions or who would benefit from preventive dental services

Established the Infectious Diseases Surveillance Unit to collect and analyze reportable disease information for early detection of disease outbreaks

Offered the Come Grow With Us Manual for Child Care Providers on-line and received over 4,600 website visits

Partnered with York Regional Police to design and implement a community-based methamphetamine strategy to prevent illegal drug use and production

Offered a safe needle exchange program to reduce the transmission of infectious diseases, distributing 8,041 sterile needles and collecting 6,494 used ones

Contacted 9,107 families following the birth of their baby through the Healthy Babies, Healthy Children program
Introduced the TTY text telephone service for hearing impaired residents through Health Connection
Partnered with 46 schools to provide a comprehensive school health program and produced newsletters for elementary and secondary teachers in 346 schools
Implemented changes to breastfeeding services which resulted in 2,391 breastfeeding clinic visits, a 13% increase in clinic visits and a 17% increase in the number of new clients serviced
Investigated 4,090 infectious disease reports and 125 outbreaks to prevent the spread of disease in the community and long term care facilities

Expanded the Dental Program for Seniors to offer preventive dental services in retirement homes, Alternative Community Living sites and York Region day programs as well as residents in long term care facilities



emergency medical services

Goal: To support safe and secure communities in York Region through the provision of high quality emergency medical services
Achievements:
Successfully achieved the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care Ambulance Service Recertification, providing The Regional Municipality of York a renewal license to operate ambulance services for a three-year term
Built the new Vaughan-Woodbridge Paramedic Response Station, incorporating Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for operation in early 2007
Trained an additional nine primary care paramedics to the advanced care paramedic (ACP) level
Continued strong partnership community affiliations with Scouts Canada and St. John Ambulance
Provided Heart Alive public access defibrillation training for 98 York Regional employees, 47 municipal employees and York Regional Police staff, and recertified 251 York Regional employees and eight municipal employees for Heart Alive training


long term care and seniors

Goal: To offer quality programs which promote the health, well being, safety and independence of seniors and adults requiring long term care services
Achievements:
Enhanced long term care services with the addition of nine convalescent care beds at the Newmarket Health Centre
Received positive feedback from our annual client satisfaction survey, with 96% of clients and families giving an overall rating of good or excellent and 94.5% indicating that they would recommend the facilities to family or friends, and 95% of clients in our Community Programs giving a rating of good or excellent and 100% indicating that they would recommend the program to family or friends


Emergency Medical Services   Long Term Care and Seniors   Public Health
EMS responded to 103,000 calls for service and provided over 250,000 service hours   Received excellent Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care compliance reviews for the Newmarket Health Centre and the Maple Health Centre

  Responded to 39,626 calls to the Health Connection toll free health information, education and counselling line
