EXCELLENCE IN LEADERSHIP

Goal: Provide Excellence in leadership
Achievements:
Mayor Dave Barrow was re-elected Chair for the fifth consecutive year and Regional Councillor Danny Wheeler Vice-Chair for the third consecutive year
Mr. Joe Persechini and Mr. Asad Malik were reappointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council for three-year terms to 2009
As a result of the Board’s nomination, Chief Armand P. La Barge received the Order of Merit from the Governor General of Canada


MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Goal: Make a Difference in Our Community
Achievements:
About 700 citizens attended Board meetings to hear about Emergency Preparedness; the York Regional Police Guns and Gangs Strategy; Drugs and Grow Ops; Traffic Safety; Protecting our Seniors; and the challenges of policing a multicultural Region
The Board co-sponsored a Guns and Gangs Community Workshop at the Community Safety Village to encourage creative discussion between citizens and the police to assist in the development of a Guns and Gangs Strategy by the York Regional Police
The Board created an Award for Civic Leadership to recognize the highest level of excellence in civic leadership in York Region. The Board presented its 2006 awards to Mr. Leo McArthur and posthumously, to Mr. Kamil Sadiq
The Board contributed $18,960 to Crime Stoppers of York Region, the Yellow Brick House, Black Leadership Empowering Youth Positively, the Herbert H. Carnegie Future Aces Foundation, the Community Safety Village, the York Regional Police Appreciation Night and various conferences
The Board passed a resolution calling on the Minister of Justice to amend the Criminal Code of Canada with respect to cruelty to animals to include a separate offence for persons who poison, injure or kill a law enforcement animal while it is aiding a peace officer engaged in the execution of his or her duties or a person assisting a peace officer. The Canadian Association of Police Boards endorsed the resolution at its Annual Meeting
The Board passed a resolution calling on the Ontario Government to authorize the use of the conductive energy device by trained, front-line police officers and urged the Ontario Association of Police Services Boards, the Canadian Association of Police Boards, the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police, and the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police to express their support
The Board made presentations at the Canadian Police College; the Police and Community Education Seminars Program at the Community Safety Village; the York Regional Police Executive Workshop; and the Ontario Association of Police Services Boards Conference


BUSINESS PLAN

Goal: Implementing The Business Plan: 2005-2007
Achievements:
The Board’s three-year Business Plan reflects the ideas and feedback received from extensive dialogue with citizens, community partners and staff. Year two objectives were successfully implemented in 2006


PROVINCIAL INSPECTION

Goal: Be in compliance with Ministry policies
Achievements:
In September, the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services issued its report on the inspection of the York Regional Police conducted in June. The Ministry found the Board to have a detailed policy development and review process, and that its policies provided context and guidance to the Board and direction to the Chief of Police. The Ministry also found the procedures of the York Regional Police to be in compliance with the Adequacy and Effective Regulation. The Board responded to the Ministry’s 22 recommendations, largely administrative in nature
