"Healthy learners are better learners." (Health Canada, 2002)
What is a Healthy School?
Healthy Schools are places where children and youth are supported by their school community to make healthy lifestyle choices. The entire school community – students, school staff, parents and community partners – work together. The focus is on health issues specific to the needs and concerns of each individual school community.
Students in Healthy Schools will:
- Be able to concentrate and learn better in class
- Develop more confidence, motivation, and self-esteem
- Be better able to make important health and life choices
- Have access to services in the community
- Be more likely to achieve better marks in school
- Have strategies to interact effectively with other students
- Attend school more regularly
- Build their resume and earn community service hours
- Help to build a positive environment at the school
The Healthy Schools approach gives students many opportunities to see and learn healthy attitudes and behaviours. Healthy choices are promoted not only in the class but in the whole school community to encourage values, skills and actions that can increase the healthy development of students.
