Water supplied to homes in York Region originates either from a lake or as groundwater. The urban areas in Markham, Richmond Hill and Vaughan are serviced by treated water from Lake Ontario. These systems use the same treatment facilities that service the City of Toronto and Peel Region. (Peel Region supply was introduced to the York Water System in the fall of 2005.)
Aurora, Newmarket, Holland Landing, Sharon, Queensville, Mount Albert, King City, Nobleton, Schomberg, Stouffville, Ballantrae/Musselman Lake, Kleinburg and Ansnorveldt obtain water from groundwater via a system of production wells operated by York Region. In rural areas, individual private wells provide water supply. Keswick and Sutton obtain water from Lake Simcoe.
York Region upgraded the water supply to Aurora and Newmarket in 2002. Small quantities of City of Toronto water are supplied to supplement the current groundwater source. This will decrease the demand on the underground aquifer and provide additional security by having a second source of supply. The initial supply to Aurora and Newmarket will only be about 10% of the total water supplied to the communities, increasing over time to a maximum of 35% in 2031. York Region is responsible for water supply, production, treatment, storage and trunk distribution. York Region is the wholesale supplier of water to the nine area municipalities. The area municipalities are the retail suppliers of water to the consumer and are responsible for their own distribution networks. The City of Toronto and Peel Region provide water supply to the southern portion of York Region and are responsible for treatment. York Region operates and maintains:
- 14 water pumping stations
- 37 storage facilities (elevated tanks and reservoirs)
- 39 production wells
- close to 150 kilometres of transmission mains
