Waste Education

Become a York Region Trash Blaster!

The Trash Blasters program provides guidance and support for participating elementary schools to reduce their waste and improve reuse and recycling efforts.

Being a Trash Blaster means taking action to transform your school into a trash-free environment.

Registration is not yet open for the 2018 – 2019 school year.  Please email if you are interested in signing up for future years of the program.

Inspire Waste Reduction at School and at Home

Trash Blasters inspires and educates staff, students and families to reduce, reuse and recycle at school and at home.

Tools and Resources

Participating schools will receive:

  • Opportunity for funding for waste reduction initiatives
  • Guidance and support to reduce waste and increase reuse and recycling
  • Tools and resources to help measure waste
  • Updated waste signage for the school
  • In-school presentations to eco-teams
  • Litterless lunch resources
  • Prizes to inspire student involvement
  • Teacher guide (provides Grade 4 curriculum connections for teaching about waste)
  • Participation pledges for the school and individual classrooms


Prizes will be provided to participating schools and may include:

  • Litterless lunch kits and reusable water bottles
  • A chance to win a live musical performance by EnviroDrum

Waste teachers guide

Environmental Services has designed a teacher’s guide that includes general waste management facts, tips on sustainable waste management practices and activity guides with curriculum links to the Ontario Ministry of Education Elementary Curriculum for Grades 4 and 5.
