Cancer Prevention

Research shows that at least 50 per cent of cancers can be prevented by making these healthy choices:

  • Be tobacco-free
    • Don’t smoke or chew tobacco
    • Smoking is related to many types of cancers
    • Non-smokers exposed to second-hand smoke are at higher risk of developing cancer
  • Eat healthy
    • Aim for seven to ten vegetables and fruit per day
    • Choose a diet low in saturated fat and high in fibre
  • Be active
    • Exercise at least two and a half hours per week
    • Choose a variety of physical activities you enjoy
    • Limit the time you spend sitting
  • Avoid or limit alcohol consumption
    • Women should have no more than one drink per day
    • Men should have no more than two drinks per day
  • Maintain a healthy body weight
    • Too many inches around your waist can increase your risk of many cancers
  • Protect your skin from the sun
    • Limit time in the sun between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
    • Seek shade
    • Cover up
    • Wear sunscreen with minimum SPF 30
    • Wear sunglasses with UV protection
  • Get screened
    • Be aware of provincial cancer screening programs for breast, cervical and colon cancers. Cancer screening saves lives
  • Get vaccinated
    • Some vaccines are used to prevent viral infections related to the development of cancer. Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines prevent cervical cancer as well as vaginal, vulvar, anal, penile and some oral cavity cancers. The Hepatitis B vaccine prevents Hepatitis and liver cancer
