Stop a fall before it happens!

A group of active seniors with the caption November is #FallPrevention month!

Did you know that falls are the leading cause of injury among older Canadians and over one third of adults 65+ are admitted to long-term care following hospitalization for a fall? Falls are often the main reason older adults lose their independence. They are also often predictable and preventable. Avoiding falls helps older adults stay healthy and independent longer.

November is Fall Prevention Month - a time to encourage Canadian organizations and individuals to come together to coordinate fall prevention efforts for a larger impact. Organizations are participating by planning activities and sharing evidence-based information on fall prevention, while individuals are becoming more informed about fall risk factors and what they can do to prevent a fall.

York Region Public Health is participating in Fall Prevention Month by encouraging older adults, caregivers and health care providers to learn more about fall prevention and the factors which can increase a person’s risk for a fall. The more risk factors a person has, the greater their chances are of falling. To find out if you, or someone you know, are at risk of falling, visit york.ca/healthyaging and complete the Fall Risk Self-Assessment Tool.

The website also promotes other important information on fall prevention and healthy aging, including Step Ahead to Fall Prevention, an online e-learning module for health care providers and caregivers and Your Guide to Preventing Falls, a comprehensive home safety guide and checklist for older adults and caregivers.
