Highway 404/Highway 7 Interchange Improvements

Transforming Highway 404/Highway 7 Interchange

In collaboration with the City of Markham and Town of Richmond Hill and under the approval of the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, York Region is:

  • Constructing Norman Bethune Avenue, a new road crossing over Highway 404, north of Highway 7
  • Constructing Aristotle Avenue by extending the Highway 404 northbound off-ramp at Highway 7
  • Realigning the Highway 7 westbound to Highway 404 northbound on-ramp

Planned improvements will complement York Region’s transit investments along Highway 7 and help move residents and travellers in the area.

Construction began spring 2016 and is expected to be completed by fall 2018.

As with other construction projects, some work may be rescheduled due to weather. Advance notice will be provided whenever possible and we thank you for your patience and understanding.

Construction update: Norman Bethune Avenue

Norman Bethune Avenue will link East Pearce Street in the Town of Richmond Hill with Centurian Drive in the City of Markham. This four-lane road will include a bridge over Highway 404, on-street bike lanes, sidewalks, trees, street lighting and traffic signals.

The work completed includes:

  • Constructed a 140 metre bridge over Highway 404, including sidewalks and bridge railings
  • Improved drainage and installing storm sewers
  • Constructed east and west bridge approaches
  • Installed a large new culvert between two stormwater management ponds

Work to be completed this year includes:

  • Constructing Norman Bethune Avenue to Allstate Parkway, including paving
  • Finishing large sections of retaining walls on the north and south side of Norman Bethune Avenue
  • Constructing the intersection of Norman Bethune Avenue/Centurian Drive and Allstate Parkway including installing traffic signals and pedestrian crossings
  • Reconfiguring and reconnecting the Seneca College property to Norman Bethune Avenue

Aristotle Avenue: Extending the northbound off -ramp at the Highway 404/Highway 7 interchange

Aristotle Avenue is an extension of the northbound off-ramp at the Highway 404/Highway 7 interchange that connects Highway 7 to Norman Bethune Avenue.

Major construction for Aristotle Avenue, began last spring.

The work completed includes:

  • Relocated utilities
  • Constructed two retaining walls, including a 120 metre retaining wall on the west side of the road
  • Installed a stormwater storage tank underneath the future road
  • Realigned and constructed a York Region watermain
  • Constructed a bridge over Aristotle Avenue to accommodate the new alignment of the westbound Highway 7 to northbound Highway 404 on-ramp

Work to be completed this year includes:

  • Constructing Aristotle Avenue between Highway 7 and Norman Bethune Avenue, including completing a 150 metre long retaining wall on the east side of the road
  • Installing traffi c signals at the intersection of Aristotle Avenue and Norman Bethune Avenue
  • Replacing existing traffi c signals at the intersection of the Highway 404 northbound off -ramp/Aristotle Avenue and Highway 7
  • Landscaping and tree planting
  • Paving the newly constructed road

Realigning the Highway 7 westbound to Highway 404 northbound on-ramp

To accommodate Aristotle Avenue, the existing Highway 7 westbound to Highway 404 northbound on-ramp was realigned and elevated over Aristotle Avenue.

Transit services

Transit services along Highway 7 will continue throughout construction. For inquiries about transit routes during construction, riders are encouraged to visit yrt.ca or call 1-866-MOVE-YRT (668-3978).
