Leslie Street and St. John's Sideroad Road Improvements

Transforming Leslie Street and St. John’s Sideroad

To accommodate growth, York Region is widening and improving Leslie Street, from Wellington Street to Mulock Drive and St. John’s Sideroad, from Bayview Avenue to Woodbine Avenue in the Town of Aurora, Town of Newmarket and Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville.

We recognize construction may be disruptive and are making every effort to minimize disruption to those living, working and travelling in the area. We will continue to keep all informed with regular updates.

Construction is occurring in three phases:

Phase 1: Leslie Street from Broughton Lane to Mulock Drive

Construction along this section was completed in summer 2017. Tree planting will occur this spring.

Phase 2: St. John’s Sideroad from Bayview Avenue to Woodbine Avenue

Major construction on St. John’s Sideroad between Bayview Avenue and Woodbine Avenue is progressing. St. John’s Sideroad from Thomas Phillips Drive/William Graham Drive to Woodbine Avenue was re-opened to traffic in December 2017. Construction will continue over the winter, with major construction resuming this spring.

Work to be completed this winter includes:

  • Finishing watermain installation

Boulevard work, including installing sidewalks, a multi-use path and landscaping, will be completed during summer 2018.

Phase 3: Leslie Street from Don Hillock Drive to south of Broughton Lane

Construction along this section of Leslie Street began in fall 2017 and is ongoing.

Construction occurring this year includes:

  • Widening the road from two to four lanes
  • Replacing two culverts and extending one culvert
  • Installing two pedestrian underpasses
  • Replacing existing traffic signals and installing new traffic signals at various intersections
  • Installing a storm sewer system
  • Installing street lighting, sidewalks and a multi-use path from Don Hillock Drive to State Farm Way

Construction is expected to be completed in late 2018.
