Creating complete communities where all residents can thrive means ensuring there are a wide variety of housing options available to keep residents connected to all that is important – employment, transportation and community resources. York Region is committed to ensuring residents have access to safe, affordable and accessible housing and is making progress towards building an inclusive community through implementing actions identified in Housing Solutions; A place for everyone, York Region’s 10-year housing plan.

The Region’s 10-year housing plan includes four goals: increase the supply of rental housing, sustain the existing rental supply, support home ownership and strengthen the homelessness and housing stability system. Most of the actions identified in the plan are complete or currently underway.

Highlights of the 2017 progress include:

  • Developing of two new Housing York buildings (Vaughan and Markham); when complete they will provide more than 420 units of affordable rental options for individuals, families and seniors
  • Working with local municipal partners to examine options for encouraging purpose-built rental housing for mid-range income households
  • Approved the Home Now Program, which supports residents experiencing chronic homelessness to find permanent housing and receive individualized supports to remain housed

York Region is initiating a five-year review of the Housing Plan, including an updated assessment of the Region’s current and future housing needs and consultations with stakeholders and community partners. An updated Housing Plan will be brought forward to Regional Council in 2019.

York Region is also updating the York Region Affordable Housing Measuring and Monitoring guidelines to ensure the approach to measuring and monitoring the supply of affordable housing better reflects affordability conditions across the Region.

The Region is working with developers to create more mid-range affordable housing as outlined in the Draft Rental Housing Incentives Guideline and Community Improvement Plan. One such initiative for developers includes a 48-month deferral for Regional development application fees for purpose-built rentals.

With rental units in high demand with low supply, the Region will continue to look to federal and provincial government funding initiatives like the National Housing Strategy and Ontario’s Fair Housing Plan for additional support.
