Budding young chefs take top prize

Grade 6 students (L to R) Kenny, Brendan, Eric, Charley with local wellness chef Andrew Muto

On Tuesday, November 7, 2017, students from Mazo de la Roche Public School, in the Town of Newmarket received their grand prize for winning the first ever You’re the Chef Cook-off! The winning grade six team invited 20 of their friends to participate in a cooking lesson at their school from local wellness chef Andrew Muto.

They learned about fresh, low cost local vegetables and fruits, and prepared a three-minute breakfast of tasty scrambled eggs with local kale and a fresh pineapple mousse. The school also received quality cooking equipment to support the start-up of a cooking club.

In spring 2017, elementary school students across York Region were invited to submit an original vegetarian entrée to enter into You’re the Chef Cook-off! The competition highlighted fresh local ingredients and the importance of learning to cook. Three finalist teams cooked-off before a panel of judges and a live audience. The other finalist schools included students from Christ the King Catholic Elementary School in the Town of Richmond Hill and Glen Cedar Public School in the Town of Newmarket.

Since 2006, York Region Public Health has delivered You’re the Chef training sessions to leaders from over 120 elementary schools, helping local schools teach their students cooking, safe food handling skills and healthy eating choices.

A second You’re the Chef Cook-off is coming in spring 2018. To learn more about this event and You’re the Chef elementary school cooking program, subscribe to our mailing list. For more information contact
