Recreation Sub Navigation

York Region is a great place to get out and explore by bicycle. Cycling clubs, specialty and repair shops, multi-use paths and YRT bike racks are all available, as are safety and education programs. We encourage our citizens to consider cycling. Cycling is a quick, smart and environmentally-friendly form of transportation.

Children and youth are required by law to wear a helmet when cycling, and all cyclists must have reflectors and lights, a bell or horn and reflective tape.

The Kids Cycling Program offers safe cycling courses to elementary and high school students. These courses are taught by certified CAN-BIKE instructors.

Resources for residents and visitors to plan cycling routes to work, school, shopping or to explore York Region by bike.

The Lake to Lake Route will be a major recreational and commuter Regional trail and is expected to be a major destination and amenity for all York Region and City of Toronto residents and visitors.

The bike boxes have been implemented to provide cyclists with a safe way to make left turns at intersections. This avoids cyclists having to cross three lanes of traffic to get into the left turn lane, and then turn across the rapidway bus lanes and three lanes of opposing traffic.
