Food Access

Nutritious food is essential for good health. Access to safe, dependable, affordable and healthy food improves both individual health and the health of community. Many people in our communities find it difficult to afford safe and healthy foods due to inadequate an income. At the same time, some people need to travel long distances to buy healthy foods because some communities do not have grocery stores or farmers markets.

Food security means safe, healthy, affordable and personally acceptable food is available to everyone. Food-secure communities value local food and recognize the importance of protecting farming land, water and people who grow and produce food. Communities and policies designed with food security in mind can result in improved health for everyone.

York Region is involved in a variety of food security initiatives and partnerships.  The goal is for all community residents to have safe, culturally acceptable, nutritionally adequate food through a sustainable food system.
