How to Apply

You can apply to Ontario Works online or by phone.

Applying Online

Fill out the online application for Social Assistance.

This will help you to:

  • Find out if you might be eligible for Ontario Works
  • Start the application process

The online application includes a screening section that tells you whether or not you might qualify for Ontario Works. The results you get will be based on the information you provide. It is important to be as accurate as you can.

To answer the questions, you will need specific information about you and the family members in your household. See below for the types of information you will need to provide before starting the application.

Applying by Phone

To apply for Ontario Works by phone, call 1-877-464-9675 or TTY 1-866-512-6228 (for the deaf or hard of hearing) for a 30 to 45 minute phone call. You will have to answer some questions and then you will get set up for an interview with a case coordinator at your local Ontario Works office.

Information you Need to Provide

Gather the documents that you are asked to bring to the interview. Some of these documents might be:

  • Birth certificate
  • Social Insurance Number (SIN) card
  • Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) card
  • Immigration/sponsorship information if applicable
  • Full address including postal code
  • Cost of rent or mortgage

Attending Your Interview

Bring all of your documents with you when you go to your interview. Staff will use your documents to decide if you qualify for financial assistance or if other programs could help you.

You need to bring your spouse and any dependents over 18 years old with you to the interview.

If you need an interpreter, Ontario Works may provide one for you.
