Employment Activities

The goal of Ontario Works is to help eligible Ontario residents get stable employment. Clients receiving financial assistance through Ontario Works have to participate in employment activities to get their monthly allowance. There are many ways York Region helps clients gain skills, upgrade their education and get a job.

Ontario Works clients can contact their case coordinator for more information on employment activities.

Individualized Employment Related Supports

Ontario Works may provide individualized supports to meet the unique needs of clients by:

  • Developing a plan to work towards employment goals
  • Assisting with referrals to programs and services to meet individualized needs
  • Collaborating with the client to find solutions to the unique challenges
  • Helping with pre-employment supports like learning how to find jobs, preparing a resume, and interview preparation
  • Job Search Handbook

Skills Training and Education

Ontario Works offers programs to help clients develop new skills and prepare for work. This may include:

  • Programs, services and basic educational supports like literacy training, English Language training, and Academic Upgrading, including improving reading, writing or math skills
  • Specialized training to help people prepare for jobs like customer service, trades, forklift and Personal Support Worker


Clients may volunteer for a non-profit organization, community group, or service club as an employment activity. Clients may get extra financial assistance for expenses like transportation, child care, clothing or equipment.

Volunteering is a great way to:

  • Update job skills
  • Get job references
  • Get new training and experience
  • Build a network
  • Build confidence

Finding Volunteer Opportunities

Clients may find their own volunteer opportunity or may request resources from Ontario Works staff. If already volunteering, please provide details to the Ontario Works Case Coordinator.

Helping Clients Find Jobs

Clients may get help from Ontario Works to:

  • Make a job plan based on their experience
  • Find jobs that suit their skills
  • Get job counselling
  • Access telephones, faxes, computers and job banks to facilitate their job search
  • Connect with employers that are hiring

Community Based Services for Residents

York Region residents may be eligible to participate in Community Based Services funded by the York Region Community Investment Strategy. Community-based services are categorized under four main categories: Community Health, Economic Independence, Housing Stability and Social Inclusion. Contact the agency directly for more information on each program.
