Traffic Data Collection/Request
Traffic Data Collection
Traffic cameras are a cost effective and innovative approach in collecting data. Video analysis determines the need for road/intersection improvements and safety measures.
The contractor, working on behalf of York Region, installs traffic cameras to collect data as part of the Region’s annual counting program. Cameras and Automated Traffic Recorders (ATR) are placed at signalized and unsignalized intersections, as well as midblock locations, across York Region.
The traffic cameras and Automated Traffic Recorders are moved throughout the Region to collect data. A traffic counter consists of tubes in the road, which collects information when a vehicle drives over it.
The cameras are positioned high to allow them to capture vehicle and pedestrian movements throughout intersections. However, the camera resolution is low, which means it does not capture license plate numbers and individual faces.
