York Region approves $1 billion capital budget for 2024
Newmarket – York Regional Council approved $1 billion in capital spending for 2024. All components of the budget align with York Region’s four Strategic Plan priorities and Capital budget spending consists of projects to meet growth needs and renewal of existing assets. Below are some highlights for 2024:
Foster Economic Prosperity
- Investing $368 million in roads and transit infrastructure to support growth and maintain assets in a state of good repair: Public Works - Transportation
- Building an additional 269 kilometres of fibre, including 1,980 new connections and facilitating high-speed internet access in rural and underserved areas: YorkNet
- Continuing to plan for the Region’s $1.12 billion capital contribution to the Yonge North Subway Extension and coordinating with the province and local municipalities as the project moves ahead: York Region Rapid Transit Corporation, Public Works –Transportation
Support Community Well-being
- Supporting community housing with 97 new units under construction and a further 400 units in advanced pre-development stages: Community and Health Services
- Adding 14 new, 28 replacement and one electric vehicle to the Paramedic Services’ fleet, and completing two new paramedic response stations to ensure the Region continues to meet response time targets: Community and Health Services
Drive Environmental Stewardship
- Investing $370 million in water and wastewater infrastructure to support increased growth of communities, address legislative changes and renew existing water and wastewater networks: Public Works – Environmental Services
- Investing in streetscaping and green infrastructure, including planting 70,000 trees and shrubs to prevent and reduce impacts of climate change and maintain and enhance green spaces: Public Works – Environmental Services
- Accelerating electrification of the bus fleet with support from the federal government: Public Works - Transportation
Effectively Deliver Trusted Services
- Maintaining 4,388 lane-kilometres of urban and rural roads: Public Works - Transportation
- Bringing people, process and technology together through digital transformation to create simpler, faster and better ways of delivering services: Corporate Management
- Implementing a new Administrative Penalty Tribunal program and camera-based enforcement using technology to streamline processes and strengthen community safety: Corporate Management
The 2024 capital budget is part of a larger $11.6 billion 10-year capital plan addressing long-term infrastructure needs and keeps existing assets in good condition. 65% of the 2024 10-year capital plan will support growth-related projects with the remainder designated to keeping the Region’s infrastructure in a state of good repair.
