York Region encourages residents to 'Be Prepared and Know your Risks' during Emergency Preparedness Week
On behalf of York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York, it is my pleasure to recognize May 5 to May 11, 2024, as Emergency Preparedness Week.
This annual event is an opportunity to increase awareness and remind all residents of the importance of readiness in our communities. This year’s theme, Be Prepared, Know York Risks, emphasizes the significance of understanding potential hazards in our communities and taking protective measures to safeguard ourselves, our families and our communities.
Emergency Preparedness Week is also a time to recognize the courage of first responders, emergency management professionals and emergency service providers and celebrate the incredible work they do to support our communities in times of crisis.
In recent years, we have witnessed the devastating impact of floods, wildfires, winter storms, tornadoes and a global pandemic. The frequency and severity of these events underscores the urgent need for preparedness and resilience. As climate change continues to exacerbate these challenges, York Region and Regional Council remain steadfast in supporting response and recovery efforts, while also prioritizing the development of more resilient communities and infrastructure.
This year, I urge all residents to review York Region’s Emergency Preparedness Guide to learn more about the top hazards and risks in our communities and the steps they can take to be prepared.
On behalf of Regional Council, I extend my thanks and appreciation to our residents, community leaders, first responders and all levels of government for your continued support in building a ready and resilient York Region.
