York Region stands up to bullying on Pink Shirt Day
On behalf of York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York, it is my pleasure to recognize Wednesday, February 28, 2024, as Pink Shirt Day and acknowledge the important role we all play in addressing bullying across our communities.
Pink Shirt Day started as an act kindness in 2007 when two Nova Scotia students bought and distributed 50 pink shirts for students to wear after witnessing a younger student being bullied for wearing one. Today, this movement has evolved into a global call to action against bullying and discrimination. It also serves as an opportunity to celebrate and embrace our cultures, identities and true selves.
As one of the most diverse communities in Canada, York Region is committed to a welcoming and inclusive community where diversity is celebrated, and everyone can live with respect, dignity and freedom from discrimination. Our communities are stronger when we have greater acceptance, respect and inclusion for everyone.
Our schools, workplaces, communities and online outlets must be safe spaces for everyone, with the responsibility to ensure this happens shared by each of us. We each have a role to play in helping one another and advocating for those who need support. In honour of Pink Shirt Day, we must continue to “lift each other up” and encourage empathy, compassion and kindness.
On Pink Shirt Day, and all year long, let’s stand up against injustice and collectively declare intolerance against all forms of bullying. Today is an opportunity for us to do our part to support a strong, caring, safe community where all feel welcome.
In honour of Pink Shirt Day, York Region’s clock tower at 17250 Yonge Street in the Town of Newmarket will be illuminated pink to encourage everyone in our communities to stand up to bullying.
