Learn the Risks and Be Prepared for Emergencies
It’s Emergency Preparedness Week (May 5 to 11, 2024), a reminder to think about emergencies even though we hope they’ll never happen. While most emergencies and natural disasters are beyond our control, there are many ways we can be prepared and keep our families and loved ones safe.
York Region has identified its top emergency risks, including severe summer and winter storms, floods, hazardous materials incidents, power outages and more. With this information, there are a few simple steps everyone can take to prepare for emergencies:
- Read our online Emergency Preparedness Guide, which provides essential information to help you prepare for, respond to and recover from emergencies and disasters
- Learn the actions you can take before, during and after an emergency, including how to develop a family emergency plan and assemble an emergency kit
- Practice your emergency plan with families and loved ones and review meeting places and plans for children, pets or family members with special considerations
Join us on May 11 for the Police and Emergency Prepared Week Open House at the Community Safety Village
A highlight of Emergency Preparedness Week is our annual Police and Emergency Preparedness Week Open House. Together with York Regional Police, join us for a fun family day while learning more about preparing for emergencies. Tickets are $10 per vehicle with all proceeds going to the United Way.
