Recognizing International Day of Older Persons
On Tuesday, October 1, we honour and celebrate the resilience, wisdom and invaluable contributions of older adults across the world.
International Day of Older Persons is a special day to express our gratitude and respect for elders who shape our communities and pave the way for future generations. Their stories offer us a glimpse into the past and invaluable lessons to guide our present and future. Older persons play a vital role in our society, including teaching younger generations, volunteering and continuing to work in various fields.
In York Region, there are now more seniors than children, and by 2051, close to one in four York Region residents will be over age 65. While many seniors remain healthy, active and connected to their communities, some require additional supports and age-friendly services. The York Region 2024 to 2027 Plan to Support Seniors strives to foster healthy aging where seniors can continue to live, work and age in strong, caring and safe communities at all ages and stages of life.
York Region offers programs and services to support seniors, caregivers and partners:
- Adult Day Programs
- Mobility on Request Transit Services
- Accessible Transit Services and Support Person Assistance Card
- Accessible Trails in York Region Forests
- Immunization Clinics and Resources
- Healthy Aging and Fall Prevention Resources
- Essential Caregiver Training
- Seniors Dental Program
- CP@Clinic Program
- Long-term care homes
- Support services to help seniors continue to live independently
Celebrate older persons on October 1, 2024, and reflect on how you can continue to support and uplift them. Whether it’s through a simple phone call, volunteering in long-term care, or advocating for support, we all have a role to play in ensuring our elders receive the respect, care and recognition they deserve.
