UPDATED FEE AT THREE YORK REGION WASTE DEPOTS
York Region’s waste depot fee will be updated to offset rising operational costs like transportation, processing and disposal starting Monday, September 25, 2023.
The fee for loads of chargeable materials or a mix of chargeable and free materials over 100 kilograms or 220 pounds will go from $125 per tonne to $170 per tonne (or $0.125 per kilogram to $0.17 per kilogram).
The fee applies to:
- Elgin Mills Community Environmental Centre, City of Richmond Hill
- Georgina Waste Transfer Station, Town of Georgina
- McCleary Court Community Environmental Centre, City of Vaughan
The fee has not changed since 2018. The updated fee is necessary to offset the rising inflationary costs of operating waste depots and supporting the growing population, while maintaining the quality of services offered.
Recent waste depot additions include an onsite camera feed at the Georgina Waste Transfer Station to help reduce wait times and the collection of bicycles and clothing/textile donations and yard waste at certain locations.
York Region and the local cities and towns provide many circular programs to help residents waste less; these include Curbside Giveaway Days, Lendery libraries, and Repair Cafes.
Loads of chargeable materials or a mix of chargeable and free materials 100 kilograms or less will remain a flat fee of $10.
In 2022, most customers using the waste depots were not charged the weight-based fee as they either dropped off free materials separately or their load was 100 kilograms or less.
