Were you invited to participate in the Transportation Tomorrow Survey?

About the Project
If you receive an invitation letter in the mail in fall 2022 and spring 2023, you and members of your household (over the age of five) are encouraged to participate in the Transportation Tomorrow Survey, the largest survey of its kind in Canada. Your household’s participation in this survey is critical to the project’s success. The Transportation Tomorrow Survey is an important tool to support planning for transportation infrastructure and services in your community and across central Ontario.
Your responses are anonymous and will be kept confidential. They are combined with others in your area and used to identify travel patterns. If you have any questions, please visit TTS2022.ca.
The Transportation Tomorrow Survey (TTS) is used to:
- Tell us how, why, and where randomly selected residents of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and Greater Golden Horseshoe (GGH) area of Ontario use transportation daily
- Help governments and transit agencies plan for future transportation needs in your community
The 2022 Transportation Tomorrow Survey is funded by 25 government organizations including the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO), Metrolinx/GO Transit, the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), and 22 municipalities across the Greater Toronto and Greater Golden Horseshoe area.
R.A. Malatest & Associates is conducting the 2022 survey, in cooperation with the University of Toronto’s Data Management Group, on behalf the funding partners.
You can participate by either calling a toll-free number or by online.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
General Information
What is the Transportation Tomorrow Survey (TTS)?
The TTS is a voluntary household travel survey that collects information about daily travel. Survey participants are asked about each member of their household's (5 years of age or older) travel on the previous weekday.
The Ministry of Transportation of Ontario conducts this survey every five years and the information collected is used to support planning for transportation infrastructure and services.
Is this survey legitimate?
Yes, the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario mailed letters to randomly selected households to invite them to participate in the survey either online or by telephone. The survey invitation letter is signed by the Assistant Deputy, Deputy, or Minister of Transportation. The survey is funded by a total of 25 local, regional, provincial and transit operating agencies.
The Ministry of Transportation can also be contacted by e-mail at @email or by telephone at 1-800-268-4686.
Who is sponsoring this survey?
The survey is co-funded by the Cities of Barrie, Brantford, Guelph, Hamilton, Orillia, Peterborough and Toronto; the Counties of Brant, Dufferin, Grey, Northumberland, Peterborough, Simcoe and Wellington; the Regional Municipalities of Durham, Halton, Niagara, Peel, Waterloo and York; The Town of The Blue Mountains and the Town of Orangeville; as well as by Metrolinx, the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario, and the Toronto Transit Commission.
Who will conduct the survey?
Canadian-based research firm R. A. Malatest & Associates Ltd. will conduct the survey on behalf of the participating government agencies.
When will the survey take place?
Data collection for the full administration of the 2022 TTS will take place in two phases through the Fall of 2022 and the Spring of 2023. If you received invitation and completed the survey in Fall 2022, you will not be contacted again in Spring 2023.
Why is this survey taking place during the COVID-19 pandemic?
The TTS has been conducted every five years since 1986. The research helps local and regional governments, as well as the province and its agencies, make transportation planning and investment decisions. The latest cycle of the TTS was originally scheduled for 2021. Due to the impact of the pandemic on daily travel patterns, the full survey was postponed to the Fall of 2022. In February 2022, a pilot survey was conducted with a small sample of households that helped us assess the stability of travel patterns. The pilot survey results, along with the results of the full survey starting in Fall of 2022, will also help us to better understand long term trends in travel patterns throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
About Participating
Is the survey mandatory?
Participation in the survey is voluntary.
While voluntary, your participation is important. Only a limited number of households are invited to join the study. The few minutes you take to participate will have a big impact by representing the travel choices and travel patterns for residents in your area.
What questions are asked?
The survey will collect information about your household, members of the household, and trips they made during the previous weekday.
Types of questions are listed here.
Should I participate if I'm retired / I don't travel anywhere / I don't often leave the house?
Yes, residents who do not travel are just as important as those that do. Your survey answers will help build a snapshot of the travel patterns of the population as a whole, including people who did not travel on the day for which travel information is being provided. Your participation will ensure the survey reflects the make-up of the general population.
Why does the survey ask questions about ethnic origin and immigration status?
These questions will help us understand whether we have surveyed a representative sample of the entire population. The survey will help us better understand the different transportation needs and travel patterns of all residents of our region, and whether access to transportation is equitable for all population groups. These questions, like other questions on the survey, are entirely voluntary.
What will be done with the data collected from this survey?
The information on travel patterns will help planners better understand residents' current transportation choices and trip purposes. Your responses will be combined with other responses in your area and the results will be used to help plan transportation infrastructure and services in communities in the Greater Golden Horseshoe (GGH) and surrounding areas to better accommodate residents' needs.
Who will be surveyed?
Households are randomly selected based on geography from a survey area that includes the Cities of Barrie, Brantford, Guelph, Hamilton, Kawartha Lakes, Orillia, Peterborough and Toronto; the Counties of Brant, Dufferin, Grey, Northumberland, Peterborough, Simcoe and Wellington; the Regional Municipalities of Durham, Halton, Niagara, Peel, Waterloo and York; and The Town of The Blue Mountains and the Town of Orangeville.
How long will the survey take?
Over the phone, the interview should take about 10 - 20 minutes. The survey may be a bit longer for larger households.
Online, the survey takes 15 to 20 minutes or more depending on your household size and number of trips.
Can I schedule a time to be called?
