Celebrating Indigenous culture, heritage and history
On behalf of York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York, it is my pleasure to recognize June as National Indigenous History Month and honour the unique heritage, culture and traditions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples from across our communities.
National Indigenous History Month is an opportunity to deepen our understanding of the unique histories, customs, spirituality and languages of Indigenous Peoples. It is a time to honour the stories, achievements and resilience of Indigenous Peoples, who have lived on this land since time immemorial and whose presence continues to impact our communities, province and country.
Throughout the month of June, I encourage all York Region residents to take the time to learn more about First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples and engage in meaningful conversations about our shared history. By listening to the voices of those with lived experience, we can all gain a deeper understanding of the Indigenous experience and the lasting impacts of colonialism.
Indigenous history is Canadian history, and the road to reconciliation is an integral part of building strong, caring, safe communities for future generations. Building a renewed relationship with First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples begins with a full understanding of our shared past based on the recognition of rights, respect and partnership.
York Region and York Regional Council remain committed to creating welcoming and inclusive communities. We acknowledge the systemic racism, discrimination and injustice Indigenous Peoples have faced, and continue to face, in Canada – and we recognize our responsibility to become allies for change so we can all move forward on the path to reconciliation.
As we mark the beginning of National Indigenous History Month, I join members of Regional Council and residents from across our nine cities in towns in honouring First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples as the stewards of Turtle Island (North America) and thank them for sharing the Canadian land with us.
