Earth Day 2025 – Our Power, Our Planet
On Tuesday, April 22, 2025, York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York join communities around the world in recognizing Earth Day. This important day calls attention to the need for environmental protection and offers an opportunity to reflect on how we can work together to build a more sustainable future.
The 2025 Earth Day theme, Our Power, Our Planet, highlights the critical role of renewable energy in driving positive environmental change. From solar and wind to emerging new technologies, the power to protect our planet is within our grasp. By investing in renewable energy, we reduce greenhouse gas emissions, lessen our resilience on fossil fuels and help safeguard the health and well-being of our communities for generations to come.
Here in York Region, we are proud to lead by example. Through bold investments in clean energy, sustainable transportation and resilient infrastructure, we are working to meet our target of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. This includes expanding access to electric vehicle charging stations, growing our electric transit fleet and improving the energy performance of our buildings. Across our operations, we continue to build on a strong foundation of environmental leadership – from achieving top marks for drinking water quality to generating clean, solar-powered electricity to support Ontario’s grid during peak demand.
While our commitment is strong, we know that real progress depends on collective action. Every resident has the power to contribute – whether by choosing active transportation, conserving energy and water at home, reducing waste or participating in community events like our upcoming forest clean-up or tree planting. Together, our individual actions add up to meaningful change.
As we mark Earth Day 2025, let us be reminded that protecting our natural environment is not just about responding to the challenges of climate change. It is about creating healthier, stronger communities where people and nature thrive. It is about acting today with the future in mind.
