York Region celebrates International Day of Forests
On behalf of York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York, I am pleased to recognize Tuesday, March 21, 2023, as International Day of Forests.
International Day of Forests is an opportunity to raise awareness of sustainable forest management and stewardship, while also celebrating the York Regional Forest, which comprises 2,500 hectares of protected land across 24 properties.
Sustaining and protecting our natural environment is a key priority for Regional Council. Through industry leading management practices, conservation, tree planting promotion, education and invasive species control, York Region strives to protect our forests and ensure a sustainable environment for future generations.
The 2023 International Day of Forests theme, Forests and Health, acknowledges the critical role our natural environment plays in the health and well-being of our communities. Forests and trees provide environmental, economic, social and public health benefits. Forests help us mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change by removing and storing carbon, reducing the risk of flooding and mitigating extreme heat.
Since 2001, York Region’s Greening Strategy has supported the development of healthy, sustainable forest resources and livable communities by promoting the planting of more than 1.7 million trees and securing more than 1,500 hectares of land for conservation.
In celebration of International Day of Forests, residents across York Region are encouraged to get outside and enjoy the countless benefits of our natural environment. With over 150 kilometres of scenic trails, including three accessible trails, the York Regional Forest offers something for everyone, 365 days a year.
