York Region celebrates National AccessAbility Week
On behalf of York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York, I am proud to recognize May 25 to 31, 2025, as National AccessAbility Week and May 28, 2025, as Red Shirt Day of Action for AccessAbility and Inclusion.
Across Canada, millions of people live with visible and invisible disabilities. In York Region, we understand that building accessible and inclusive communities is essential to our collective strength and success.
This week is an opportunity to celebrate the leadership, resilience and contributions of persons with disabilities, while recognizing the important work that remains. Barriers to participation, opportunity and quality of life still exist – and it is our shared responsibility to remove them.
York Region is proud to be guided by the York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee, whose important work and lived experience help shape the policies, services and infrastructure that make our communities more welcoming, inclusive and accessible for all.
At York Region, we lead with action – embedding accessibility into our planning, investing in inclusive community design and moving forward in partnership with persons with disabilities. Together, we are building a region where every person can live, work and thrive.
On Red Shirt Day, we invite all residents to wear red in a visible show of support and solidarity. Together, we celebrate achievements, raise awareness and renew our commitment to an accessible future for everyone.
In recognition of Red Shirt Day, the clock tower at the York Region Administrative Centre in the Town of Newmarket will be illuminated red on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.
