York Region mourns death of RCMP Const. Rick O’Brien
On behalf of York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York, I extend deepest condolences to the family, friends, colleagues and loved ones of Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Const. Rick O’Brien.
Const. O’Brien, a seven-year veteran of the RCMP, was killed while serving in the line of duty on Friday, September 22, 2203, in the City of Coquitlam, British Columbia. Two RCMP officers were also injured in the incident, and we extend to them our best wishes for a full recovery.
The loss of a member of a police service is a loss to all who are home to our communities. The men and women who selflessly and bravely serve in the RCMP, OPP and local police forces do so to protect the safety and well-being of our residents and our communities.
Over the last few years, we have mourned the loss of far too many members or our country’s police services. While it is important to honour the memory of those lost in the line of duty, we must also do more to address the increased violence that has once again led to a senseless loss of life.
Every day, the women and men who serve and protect our communities put themselves at risk to uphold our laws and help those in need. Today, we offer our support to all first responders as they mourn the loss of a colleague in uniform.
I join Regional Council, the York Regional Police Services Board, the residents of York Region and those in uniform in celebrating the life and mourning the loss of a dedicated and hard-working member of the RCMP.
We will keep Const. O’Brien, his family and his colleagues in our hearts as we collectively grieve this terrible loss. We will also keep the injured officers in our thoughts as they recover.
