Georgina Water Treatment Plant In-Water Geotechnical Investigations
The Regional Municipality of York is conducting field studies as part of the Georgina Water Treatment Plant Mussel Control, Intake-Outfall-Pipe and Site Rehabilitation project. The field studies began in April 2021 and are needed before the rehabilitation work can begin. Rehabilitation work includes improvements to the Georgina Water Treatment Plant, repairs to damaged outfall and intake pipes and upgrades to the mussel control system located in Lake Simcoe.
In-water geotechnical investigations in Lake Simcoe near Willow Wharf have begun and are needed to understand the lakebed physical properties and evaluate coastal conditions. Prior to in-water geotechnical work, York Region consulted federal and provincial regulatory agencies and obtained all necessary permits to conduct the work.
When: November 2021 to January 2022
What Can you Expect?
- The geotechnical investigations are in Lake Simcoe from a barge located approximately 1.5 kilometres from Willow Wharf
- York Region will be working on the barge in Lake Simcoe during daylight hours; the barge is moved to the geotechnical investigation site daily and is docked at Jackson’s Point Harbour
- In-water work and drilling methods used will cause minimal disturbance to the lakebed and will not affect the ecology of the lake; the in-water investigations provide information for required rehabilitation and repair in an environmentally sensitive manner
- There will be minor noise due to the operation of the equipment on the barge, though every effort will be made to reduce the noise
- Willow Wharf Park will remain open
- This work will not affect water or wastewater services in your area
As with all construction projects, some work may be rescheduled due to weather or other conditions. Thank you for your patience while we complete this vital work. Visit york.ca/waterconstruction for more information about water and wastewater construction projects.
