Recognizing International Day of Older Persons and National Seniors Day
Sunday, October 1st, is International Day of Older Persons and National Seniors Day. This is a special day dedicated to honouring and celebrating the invaluable contributions and achievements of older adults in our society. It also serves as a reminder to appreciate the wisdom, experience and resilience that older people bring to our lives. It is an opportunity to express our gratitude and respect for the elders who have played significant roles in shaping our communities and paving the way for future generations.
York Region’s seniors’ population is expected to double over the next thirty years. The number of York Region residents aged 65 and older is currently greater than the number of children younger than 15. There is also a growing number of seniors over the age of 75 who are experiencing more chronic conditions and complex needs. This is why York Region remains committed to fostering healthy aging where seniors can continue to live, work and age in strong, caring and safe communities. To support this commitment, York Region is developing a proposed 2023-2027 York Region Plan to Support Seniors. To learn more about this plan, visit york.ca/planforseniors.
York Region offers a number of programs and services to support seniors, caregivers and those partnering in their wellbeing:
