Residents' Council Week
Residents' Council Week is celebrated the third week of September and is an opportunity to recognize the important role Residents' Councils play in shaping the place Long-Term Care (LTC) residents call home. They bring residents together as peers to discuss topics of importance and to stay connected and engaged in the home’s operations and decision-making. The Council is intended and designed to form the collective voice of all residents who reside in the long-term care home, whether they attend meetings or not. All residents have the right to participate in the Residents' Council, which meets monthly.
During Residents' Council Week, both Newmarket and Maple Health Centres are celebrating the people who contribute to and support the success of the council in the Homes by having live entertainment, special meals, resident council themed games, social events and a Residents' Council award presentation.
In celebration of Residents' Council Week, the Ontario Association of Residents’ Councils (OARC) will continue to award one LTC home with the Sharron Cooke Legacy Award. Last year, Newmarket Health Centre was awarded the inaugural award in honour of Sharron Cooke, who was a resident, leader and great inspiration to the residents at Newmarket Health Centre. The Sharron Cooke Legacy Award honours the people who live and work in Ontario LTC homes and celebrates homes that promote a culture of open, authentic communication and collaboration between residents and team members.
We look forward to continuing to seek and listen to the important voices of our Residents and providing excellent care and services at our homes.
Wishing everyone an inspired Residents' Council Week 2023!
