York Region traffic safety partners urge caution as daylight hours shorten
York Region, York Region Paramedic Services, York Regional Police (YRP) and the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) joined together this week near King City Secondary School in the Township of King to remind students and residents about the importance of road safety as daylight hours decrease.
The road safety event highlighted a critical seasonal concern as November consistently records the highest number of pedestrian-involved collisions in York Region. Shorter days and poor weather conditions reduce visibility, increasing risks for all road users.
As part of York Region’s Vision Zero Traveller Safety Plan, traffic safety partners shared practical tips for motorists and pedestrians to Be Visible, Be Seen. Reflective zipper pulls and other visibility-enhancing items were distributed to students and residents.
Visibility is key to safety. The following simple actions can save lives.
- For Motorists:
- Avoid distractions and stay alert for pedestrians and cyclists
- Slow down in poor weather and low-light conditions
- Turn on headlights as daylight fades and ensure wipers are functional
- Approach intersections cautiously and watch for crossing pedestrians
- For Pedestrians:
- Remove earbuds and make eye contact with drivers before crossing
- Wear bright or reflective clothing and consider lights or reflectors on bags
- Use designated crosswalks and intersections
- Carry a flashlight during evening walks
