Renewing our plan to support seniors

The York Region Seniors Strategy looked at better ways to support the changing needs of the growing and aging seniors population. Since its implementation in 2016, many initiatives and accomplishments have been worked on or completed, including:

• Health and Community Support Directory: Laying the groundwork for the Eastern York Region North Durham Ontario Health Team and community partners to develop a centralized Health and Community Support Directory with a section dedicated to services for older adults
• Personal Medical Information Kits: Over 10,000 kits have been distributed to seniors and caregivers to help them manage their health information and be prepared for a health emergency
• Community Paramedicine for Long-Term Care: In 2021, approximately 500 clients received ongoing support such as health-based assessments, clinical services and referrals to community health care providers through the CP@Clinic program
• Unionville Seniors Hub and Community Centre: Engaged more than 450 residents and partners to identify potential programs and services in the future seniors’ hub and community center of the new Housing York Inc. community housing building for seniors in Markham
• Mobility On-Request 65+: As part of the COVID-19 response, seniors are able to request transit throughout York Region to destinations within 5 km of their home, including trips to grocery stores, medical appointments and pharmacies. Over 3,400 on-request trips were completed between July 2020 and June 2022

Over the past year, York Region has engaged residents and stakeholders and will continue to do so in coming months to help inform the proposed 2023-2027 York Region Plan for Seniors. The proposed Plan will be shared with Regional Council in the spring of 2023.
