Prenatal Classes

Prenatal education is an effective way for expectant parents to prepare for childbirth and the care of newborns. York Region offers classes designed to support pregnant women and their partners to have a healthy pregnancy, a healthy birth experience and a healthy baby. We encourage you to register and attend prenatal classes early to fully benefit from the information.

  • Evening or weekend in-person Prenatal classes teach expectant parents about labour, birth and how to care for newborns.
  • Online Prenatal education is an interactive version covering similar topics which helps prepare expectant parents for labour, childbirth and caring for a newborn
  • La Leche League Canada is providing free Prenatal Breastfeeding Classes providing preparation and education for expectant mothers and their partners
  • All Babies Count prenatal nutrition program is a free weekly program for women of all ages who need extra support during their pregnancy. Expecting mothers learn about nutrition, pregnancy and parenthood. These classes are led by public health nurses and nutrition educators.

 

Evening or weekend in-person Prenatal classes

Prenatal classes teach future parents about pregnancy and prepare them for the early stages of being a parent. Participants learn about labour, birth and how to care for newborns.

York Region offers both evening and weekend classes. Evening classes run for six weeks and are two hours long. Weekend classes are six and a half hours a day for two days.

Classes are offered in English, Cantonese and Mandarin.

By registering for the in-person prenatal class, you also will receive a link for the online prenatal program. You and your partner (support person) can enter and exit the program and bookmark the page for your next visit. You can also print pages that are important to you. It is recommended that you review Chapters 1 and 2 in early pregnancy. The online prenatal program works best with a high speed internet connection. It requires the Adobe Flash Player and cannot be viewed on a mobile Apple operating system.


Eligibility

This program is available to pregnant women and their support person or partner living in York Region.

Registration is required. Register early to secure your spot in the class.


Cost

The cost for a session is $45.73. The price includes expecting mom and one support person.

Online Prenatal Program

The online prenatal program is an interactive learning option including pictures, videos, text and quizzes. All are designed to help women and their partners or support persons prepare for labour, childbirth and caring for their new baby.

  • The program has seven chapters and takes about six to eight hours to complete
  • The audio option along with video and text makes the learning accessible and appealing
  • Printable fact sheets provide information about pregnancy, parenting and community resources

The Gift of Motherhood Canada online prenatal program is offered by a third party, Customized Communications Inc. Once you register, a link will be provided. You and your support person can enter and exit the program and bookmark the page for your next visit. You can also print pages that are important to you. The program works best with a high speed internet connection. It requires the Adobe Flash Player and cannot be viewed on a mobile Apple operating system.

Cost

There is no cost for the online prenatal program for expectant moms and their support person.

The online prenatal program option will be included when registering for in-person prenatal classes. Please do not register for the online prenatal program if you plan to register for an in-person prenatal class.

Prenatal Breastfeeding Classes - Best for Babies

La Leche League Canada offers prenatal breastfeeding classes for you and your partner delivered by nationally accredited La Leche League Canada Leaders (breastfeeding educators).

Topics Include:

  • The advantages of breastfeeding for mother and baby
  • Avoiding and overcoming difficulties
  • Optimizing positioning and latch
  • Adjusting to life with a breastfed baby
  • Normal breastfed baby behaviour

Eligibility

This program is open to people living in York Region.

Registration is required. 


Cost

This program is provided at no cost.
