Share the true #SpiritofYR

There is a light at the end of every tunnel and York Region is inviting you to help shine a light on the pockets of positivity uplifting our community.

We, as a community, are facing unprecedented COVID-19 challenges and are being asked to do our part to flatten the curve by practicing physical distancing and staying home as much as possible. But we, as a community, won’t let it break our spirit.

We are inviting residents, businesses and organizations in the York Region community to share their positive stories of a neighbour, a frontline worker, family member or anyone who has gone above and beyond during COVID-19.

Share a photo of a piece of artwork displayed in a window or a simple act of kindness that made your day. Share a photo of you holding a message of thanks to dedicated frontline workers who continue to serve and support the community.

Share something that simply made you smile.

During tough times we can lift each other up and support each other’s mental health by focusing on and highlighting positive moments, large or small.

Show us the true #SpiritofYR by:

  • Sharing your positive stories about fellow York Region residents, York Region staff, organizations and businesses who are going above and beyond in the community during the COVID-19 pandemic
  • Sharing photos that have captured a moment of positivity or made your day
  • Post your stories and photos on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram using the hashtag #SpiritofYR

We’ve put together a few #SpiritofYR thank you template colouring pages you can do at home.

Please be aware all submissions received as part of York Region’s #SpiritofYR campaign through any channel, including email, direct message, social media tag or hashtag use, are subject to the official #SpiritofYR Terms and Conditions.

Help us build a living history of current events

Beyond recognizing the #SpiritofYR, we have the unique opportunity to contribute to future generations’ understanding of COVID-19 in York Region by documenting our stories and preserving them in the York Region Archives.

Residents of all ages are encouraged to keep a journal (paper or digital), make an audio or video recording, write a poem, take photos, or create a scrapbook or a diary (don’t forget to add the date!), to capture your thoughts and feelings. You may wish to document:

  • Stories of everyday heroes (the Spirit of YR!)
  • What it’s like to shop
  • How the streetscape/landscape has changed
  • Experiences of physical distancing
  • Personal struggles
  • Challenges of keeping kids busy during self-isolation
  • Challenges of kids having to learn online and having parents working from home

Here’s a journal template you can use as inspiration to get you started.

Help us make these items accessible for future generations by providing them to the York Region Archives to be preserved. Contact archives@york.ca if you are interested in donating your records.

Continue to flatten the curve.

While it is important to highlight the positive stories from across York Region, residents must also continue to stay up-to-date with the latest recommendations from public health experts such as self-isolating, physical distancing and staying home as much as possible.

Stay up-to-date by visiting york.ca/COVID19
