Notice of Construction

16th Avenue to Steeles Avenue
City of Richmond Hill and City of Markham

The Regional Municipality of York (York Region) works hard to maintain the excellent condition of Regional roads for motorists, cyclists, pedestrians and transit users. York Region is making improvements to Bayview Avenue from 16th Avenue to Steeles Avenue in the City of Richmond Hill and City of Markham.

Construction is anticipated to begin May 4, 2020 and is expected to be complete in the fall of 2020. This work may be rescheduled due to weather conditions or delays related to COVID-19 Public Health guidelines. York Region will provide advance notice whenever possible.

Road improvements on Bayview Avenue include:

  • Removal and replacement of existing asphalt
  • Upgrading intersections to meet Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act requirements including push buttons, upgraded walkways, curb depressions and tactile (raised) walking surfaces

York Region’s priority during construction is to minimize disruption to those living, working and travelling in the area. In order to do this, most of the construction work will be completed at night between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m., and on Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Temporary lane restrictions will also be in place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays. Work will not be occurring on Sundays or statutory holidays.

What are the benefits of this project?

  • Travellers will get a rehabilitated road and pedestrian features such as push buttons, upgraded walkways, curb depressions and tactile plates ensuring a safer commute for all road users.

Why is this road work needed?

  • Once a road has been constructed, it is important to maintain it so the road can last for as long as possible before needing to be replaced completely. Roads are inspected regularly and maintenance, such as removing and laying new asphalt, is completed when deemed necessary.

Does this project include widening Bayview Avenue?

The scope of the project only involves the removal and replacement of existing asphalt and intersection improvements, it does not include the widening of Bayview Avenue.

Will there be any night work?

York Region’s priority during construction is to minimize disruption to those living, working and travelling in the area. Are there any lane closures or reductions associated with this project?

Bayview Avenue will remain open to traffic throughout construction, and access to residents and businesses will be maintained. Construction will occur on no more than 500 metres of road each day, with the location moving throughout the construction period. To accommodate construction, lane reductions may occur Monday to Saturday between the hours of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Can pedestrians and cyclists still use the road?

  • Pedestrian and cyclist access will be maintained during construction
  • Restrictions at intersections may be required as work is completed and pedestrians may be directed to use an alternate side of the intersection to cross

Safety is a priority on all Regional construction sites. For everyone’s safety, please reduce your speed through the construction area.
