Highway 7 Intersection Improvements

Notice of Road Construction

Updated August 13, 2019

Highway 7 and Main Street Unionville and Highway 7 and Kennedy Road
In the City of Markham

The Regional Municipality of York is investing in building a safe, efficient and reliable Regional transportation network for all users. York Region is making improvements to the intersections of Highway 7 and Main Street Unionville and Highway 7 and Kennedy Road in the City of Markham.

Temporary signals were installed this past winter and utility relocation is now complete. Construction on the intersection of Highway 7 and Kennedy Road began early April 2019 and was anticipated to be complete by summer 2019. During construction, Bell fibre cables were hit, impacting the proposed timeframe for improvements to this intersection. The Bell fibre cables have now been restored and construction has resumed. Construction is anticipated to be complete by fall 2019.

Graphic map showing the locations of the two intersection construction locations. For a detailed description contact 1 877 464 9675 extension 75923.

Intersection improvements include:

  • Widening and repaving the intersection
  • Constructing new bus bays and upgrading York Region Transit bus pads with bus shelters, waste units and bike racks. The new bus bays will allow buses to pick up and drop off passengers without delaying traffic.
  • Upgrading the traffic signals and crosswalks to meet new Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) requirements
  • Installing storm sewers to accommodate widening

Both intersections will remain open to traffic during construction and access will be maintained. Temporary lane restrictions will be in place between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to allow for construction. One lane will remain open in each direction during this time. Transit stops may be relocated during construction and signs will be placed on the street to notify pedestrians of the new locations. Bus shelters and waste units may also be temporarily removed. Temporary bus stops are installed along Highway 7 for transit rider safety when boarding. For inquiries about transit routes during construction, riders are encouraged to visit yrt.ca or call 1-866-MOVE-YRT (668-3978).

We recognize construction may be disruptive and thank you for your patience and understanding.

Safety is a priority on all Regional construction sites. For everyone’s safety, please reduce your speed through the construction area. Please contact us if you notice any safety issues in and around the construction sites.
