Major Mackenzie Drive Road Improvements

Road Construction Update

Canadian Pacific Railway Bridge Construction
City of Vaughan

The Regional Municipality of York is transforming Major Mackenzie Drive from Highway 50 to Highway 400 in the City of Vaughan. This transformation has been divided into four sections and will take several years to complete.

Improvements underway from east of the proposed Highway 427 Extension to Islington Avenue include:

  • Widening Major Mackenzie Drive to six lanes
  • Building a bridge to take the new Major Mackenzie Drive over the Canadian Pacific Railway tracks
  • Connecting Major Mackenzie Drive at Highway 27 and building a 150-metre long bridge over the Humber River
  • Installing multi-use paths, sidewalks and street lighting

This map shows details about the various roads and detours under construction in your area:

Soil arriving this spring for Canadian Pacific Railway Bridge construction

At the end of 2018, the detour required to build the bridge to take Major Mackenzie Drive over the Canadian Pacific Railway tracks was constructed and opened. This detour will remain in place for at least two years while the bridge is constructed.

Starting April 2019, large amounts of soil will be trucked in to the bridge construction site. Soil is being placed to build the road leading up to the bridge on either side. This work is scheduled to take approximately four months to complete. Once in place, there could be up to a year of inactivity at this location as the ground underneath settles.

Keeping Major Mackenzie Drive clean

York Region has instructed its contractor to keep Major Mackenzie Drive clean within the Region’s construction zone and to take precautions to minimize tracking mud onto Major Mackenzie Drive. Should mud appear on the road, the contractor will sweep and flush the road as required.

Please keep in mind three major construction projects are underway in your area:

  1. York Region’s Major Mackenzie Drive road improvements
  2. The Ontario Ministry of Transportation’s Highway 427 extension
  3. Ongoing subdivision development
The Region has advised its contractor to not use subdivision roads, however you will still see truck traffic on subdivision roads for subdivision construction.

For everyone’s safety, please reduce your speed through the construction area. Please contact us if you notice any safety issues in and around the construction sites.
