Yonge Street Aquifer Well Capacity Restoration Project Public Information Centre

In January 2012, The Regional Municipality of York (York Region) initiated a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) study under Schedule B of the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment document (October 2000, as amended). The Class EA study will identify a solution to restore the full permitted capacity of York Region’s municipal wells in the Yonge Street Aquifer well field area (see map), while maintaining the long-term protection of groundwater supply for the Towns of Aurora, East Gwillimbury and Newmarket (the Project). This Project represents responsible management of the Yonge Street Aquifer.

The Project includes a groundwater exploration study to identify suitable locations for new municipal production well(s). An evaluation of alternatives determined that the recommended preferred solution involves rehabilitation/ restoration of three existing wells and drilling production wells at Well Area 11 – Aurora Well No. 5 and Well Area 6 – Green Lane. Next steps for the Project include confirming the suitability of these preferred test sites through construction of a large-diameter test well and groundwater pumping test.

Public Information Centres (PICs) were previously held in the Towns of East Gwillimbury and Aurora in June 2012. The PICs presented the study background, information about existing wells, and options for addressing reduced capacity issues including rehabilitating existing wells and drilling new municipal production wells.

York Region will host PICs to present the findings of the Class EA process, provide a Project status update and to present the recommended preferred solution for the Project. All those with an interest in the Project are encouraged to attend. The PICs will be arranged as an open house with a presentation and will be held at the following locations:
