Yonge Street Aquifer (YSA) Well Capacity Restoration Project Status Update March

1) Class Environmental Assessment

York Region is in the process of confirming the Recommended Preferred Solution, which consists of rehabilitating existing municipal wells in Aurora and Newmarket and constructing new wells in Aurora and East Gwillimbury. Ongoing and upcoming activities are as follows:

  • Large-diameter test well drilling and testing program to confirm the Preferred Solution (Phase 2)

2) Groundwater Exploration Program and Other Field Work

The next phase of the groundwater exploration program includes drilling a large-diameter test well at each of the two preferred test sites. Additional tests will be conducted on the wells to confirm the quantity of water available and to monitor surrounding environmental features. 

Updates for each site are provided below:


Well Area 11 –Aurora Well No. 5 Test Site (existing municipal well site, 256 Old Yonge Street at Yonge Street & St John’s Sideroad)

  • York Region’s consultant has prepared/submitted applications for site permits required to drill the large-diameter test well
  • York Region anticipates that site preparation and construction of the large-diameter test well will start in spring 2014

East Gwillimbury:

Well Area 6 - Green Lane Test Site

  • York Region is making arrangements with property owners to complete a Stage 2 Archaeological Assessment and to permit property access for drilling
  • York Region will provide an updated timeline for site preparation and construction of the large-diameter test well once property owner agreements are in place

3) New Notices

Once the schedule has been confirmed, a notice will be distributed to local residents in advance of site preparation and construction of the large-diameter test well at the Aurora Well No.5 Test Site.

4) Overall Schedule

  • Study commencement – completed May 2012
  • Public Information Centre #1 – completed June 2012
  • Six-inch test well drilling and testing program – completed August 2013
  • Public Information Centre #2 – completed September 2013
  • Large-diameter test well drilling program – spring 2014
  • Completion of Environmental Assessment – fall/winter 2014 (pending confirmation of Green Lane Test Site plans).
  • Completion of detailed design – winter 2016
  • Construction – summer 2016 to spring 2018

Note: Schedules have been adjusted since the last public meeting. Delays in the large-diameter well construction were due to the early onset of winter weather conditions and property owner negotiations.
