2018 Capital Budget

The Regional Municipality of York 2018 $3 billion budget approved by York Regional Council includes capital spending of $810 million in 2018.

Managing environmentally sustainable growth is a pillar of York Region’s 2015 to 2019 Strategic Plan. Well-maintained infrastructure including transit and roads plus water and wastewater systems ensure York Region continues to provide excellent quality of life for those who live, work and play in our growing communities.

Highlights of 2018 capital projects

$222 million – Roads

  • Building a new overpass across Highway 404, north of 16th Avenue to provide a transportation connection across the highway
  • Improving Major Mackenzie Drive and Leslie Street, including road-widening, pedestrian and cyclist facilities, lighting and signals
  • Repaving 120 kilometres of Regional road network

$203 million – Transit

  • Replacing 25 Viva buses and 30 conventional buses
  • Working with Metrolinx, the TTC and City of Toronto to advance the planned extension of the TTC's    Line 1 to the Town of Richmond Hill (Yonge Subway Extension)
  • Completing 8.9 kilometres of centre lane bus rapidways on Yonge Street in the Town of Richmond Hill and the Town of Newmarket, and 12.6 kilometres on Highway 7 West in the City of Vaughan

$146 million – Water and Wastewater

  • Rehabilitating trunk sewers in the Regional wastewater system to provide cost-effective wastewater conveyance and treatment services for York Region residents
  • Continuing work on the Upper York Sewage Solutions Project to meet anticipated growth needs in the municipalities of East Gwillimbury, Newmarket and Aurora
  • Construction of Toronto and Peel water supply cost-shared works to maintain secure water supplies

$109 million – Property Services

  • Continuing construction of the York Region Administrative Centre Annex building in the Town of Newmarket to provide consolidated access to Regional Services
  • Rehabilitating and repairing existing York Region facilities

$72 million – Community and Health Services

  • Redeveloping community housing sites in the City of Markham and the City of Vaughan
  • Addressing the challenges of a growing, aging and diversifying population through the Paramedic Services Master Plan
  • Supporting age-friendly, complete communities for seniors through appropriate housing options and more accessible transportation
