York Region welcomes Ontario’s actions toward transit-oriented communities

Chairment Statement Picture

The Regional Municipality of York welcomes the Ontario government’s continued support for the physical and economic health and well-being of all Ontarians with the proposed Made-in Ontario Plan for Growth, Renewal and Economic Recovery Plan and newly passed Building Transit Faster Act.

These actions to support transit-oriented communities will help deliver critical infrastructure projects faster and drives York Regional Council’s key priorities of building complete communities to support growth now and in the future.

The way we plan and build communities has an impact on the physical, mental and social health of our residents. From integrating affordable housing to building much needed infrastructure to support transportation and grow economic vitality, we look forward to working with the Ontario government to help create communities where our residents can thrive.

Under historic joint transit partnership agreements and the Memorandum of Understanding between Ontario, York Region and the City of Toronto, we can continue moving forward on the estimated $5.6 billion Yonge Subway Extension. With the Building Transit Fast Act, we can expedite this process to ensure travellers get where they want to go, reduce congestion and drive the economy.

I am also pleased with the province’s other measures to promote transit-oriented communities including a $2.6 billion investment into highways and bridges.

On behalf of York Regional Council, I commend Ontario’s on-going commitment to responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, while at the same time focusing on economic recovery.

Together, we will overcome the hardship faced from COVID-19 and restore community health and well-being, local jobs and the economy.
