Court Services brings enhancements to order

Newmarket – The Regional Municipality of York released the Court Services Annual Report, highlighting key accomplishments in 2016 and initiatives for 2017.

“York Region administers the second largest Provincial Offences Act court program in Ontario,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson. “As such, it is important we continue to find innovative approaches to modernizing and improving our processes.”

In 2016, Court Services continued to utilize technology and partner with stakeholders to improve service and focus on continuous improvement. Highlights include: 
  • 152,730 charges filed
  • Provided almost 170,000 in-person and telephone services to court users
  • Implemented case management software to improve administrative processes in prosecution services
“York Region provides timely, quality and cost-effective access to justice,” said Town of Richmond Hill Mayor David Barrow, Chair of the Region's Finance and Administration. “Being progressive and collaborative allows us to regularly find ways to create flexibility and enhancements to service delivery.”

In 2017, Court Services is continuing to create efficiencies, including: 
  • Leveraging technology to create operational efficiency
  • Expanding the collection strategy to further maximize collection of defaulted fines and increase fine revenue
  • Developing and implementing enhancements to improve access to court information and documents
Court Services operates two court locations and administers the provincial offences court program in York Region, which deals with a range of non-criminal charges such as fines for speeding or not wearing your seat belt, and provides related prosecution services.
