Creating an even greener York Region

2017 Greening achievements show on the ground action to support healthy communities

Newmarket – The benefits of trees and green infrastructure continue to increase based on the 2017 Greening Strategy report from The Regional Municipality of York.

“The accomplishments outlined in the 2017 Greening Strategy speak to the sound investment we are making when it comes to managing our green spaces,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson. “Programs such as tree planting and educating the public about the environment, benefit our planet and helps improve the overall health of our residents.”
In 2017, York Region surpassed its targets to preserve and enhance green spaces. These achievements include:

“York Region continues to be recognized as a leader in advancing environmental initiatives,” said City of Vaughan Regional Councillor Mario Ferri, Chair of Environmental Services. “The actions outlined in our Greening Strategy work together to protect and enrich our natural environment and will have a lasting impact on future generations.”

The upper layer of foliage formed by mature tree crowns is referred to as canopy cover. With a current canopy cover of 31 per cent, every tree planted in York Region moves us closer to the goal of 35 per cent canopy cover by 2031. Green spaces, including trees and shrubs, play an important role in our community’s health by providing relaxing places with shade where we can enjoy the outdoors and be active.

York Region will continue to work with partners, local cities and towns to protect and preserve environmental lands and increase canopy cover.
