Fresh food, sustainability and supporting local economy Celebrate Canada’s Agriculture Day

Celebrate Canada’s Agriculture Day

Newmarket – Join York Region in celebrating and recognizing the importance of agriculture on Canada’s Agriculture Day, today – Tuesday, February 11.

York Region is home to over 700 unique farms and we know farmers take great pride in the work they do to help feed our local, national and international communities.

In York Region alone, the broader agri-food sector – everything from farms to food processors and retailers – provides over 57,000 jobs and contributes more than $2.7 billion to our local economy. Supporting local agriculture and farms is a fresher option and saves on shipping costs.

To mark this day, check out these three local agricultural spotlights:

Rose Family Farm, Town of East Gwillimbury

ClearWater Farm, Town of Georgina

Sharon Creek Farm, Town of East Gwillimbury

To find additional fresh produce and local farms, check out the 2019 York Farm Fresh Map which highlights farms across the Region.

York Regional Council has made agriculture a priority by endorsing the Agriculture and Agri-Food Sector Strategy. This strategic action plan, which is supported by the Agriculture and Agri-Food Advisory Committee outlines recommended actions to ensure that agriculture and agri-food remains a strong and viable sector in York Region.
