Helping hospitals grow community health in York Region

Funding helps improve access and deliver timely health care

Newmarket – York Region continues to help our hospitals grow and improve services to residents, through its multi-year commitment to providing $342 million in funding through 2031.

“Protecting public health is a core value of the 2015 to 2019 Strategic Plan and we are on track to meet our commitment to our hospitals and to our communities at large,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson. “This year, the contribution is nearly $14.7 million to fund hospital capital projects providing residents with improved access to appropriate and timely health care.”

Annual funding amounts are adjusted for hospital performance and assessment growth, and divided among four local hospitals: Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hosptial, Markham Stouffville Hospital, Southlake Regional Health Centre and Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital. In 2017, all Regional hospitals met the 30-minute average target off-load time, calculated from when an ambulance arrives at hospital with a patient to the time hospital staff assume patient care. If the 30-minute off-load target is not achieved, capital funding provided to the hospital may be reduced to address operating costs incurred by York Region Paramedic Services to maintain response time targets.

2018 funding amounts for the four hospitals include:

Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital

Markham Stouffville Hospital

Southlake Regional Health Centre

Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospita

Total $14,675,384

“As York Region grows to welcome new families and businesses, we need to continue providing improved access to health care,” said Town of Richmond Hill Mayor David Barrow, Chair of Finance and Administration. “The contribution, combined with the off-load standard, helps ensure the Region and local hospitals work collaboratively to provide timely health care assistance to those who need it.”
