Keeping on track with the Yonge Subway Extension

York Regional Council requests Federal government’s commitment to help fund Yonge Subway Extension

Newmarket – York Regional Council supports Ontario’s new Transit Plan and investment, and is asking the Government of Canada to confirm its participation as a funding partner with a specific 40% funding commitment for the Yonge Subway Extension.

“Continuing to advance the Yonge Subway Extension requires sustained support from all levels of government,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson. “A project of this magnitude benefits the economy and the environment, but most of all helps create a seamless transportation network for residents and travellers.”

The Province of Ontario recently announced the $28.5 billion expansion to Ontario’s transit network, including the Yonge Subway Extension.

“As the Region’s number one priority, it is fantastic to see the momentum building around the Yonge Subway Extension,” said Township of King Mayor Steve Pellegrini, Chair of Transportation Services. “As we get ready to put shovels in the ground, we will also be exploring opportunities to work with other partners that could provide or generate additional funding options.”

The Yonge Subway Extension is a cross-jurisdictional project spanning the City of Toronto, City of Markham, City of Vaughan and the City of Richmond Hill. It extends 7.4 kilometres north on Yonge Street from Finch Station to the Richmond Hill/Langstaff Gateway Urban Growth Centre at Highway 7.

This critical rapid transit link will include up to six stations at Cummer/Drewry, Steeles, Clark, Royal Orchard, Langstaff/Longbridge and Richmond Hill Centre. It will also include two intermodal terminals and 2,000 commuter parking spaces near Yonge Street and Highway 407. For more information, please visit vivanext.com/YSEcantwait
