More than $1 million raised for United Way Greater Toronto by staff at York Region and York Regional Police

2019-2020 employee campaign supports United Way agencies assisting our most vulnerable residents

Newmarket – The Regional Municipality of York and York Regional Police concluded its 2019-2020 employee fundraising campaign with a $1,025,000 donation to United Way Greater Toronto, marking 27 consecutive years of giving to the charity.

“On behalf of York Regional Council, I would like to congratulate and thank York Region and York Regional Police teams for their outstanding efforts during the 2019-2020 fundraising campaign,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson. “Members in our community have never needed us more than they do right now, and even during the most challenging health crisis of our time, our employees are demonstrating their commitment to our vision to create strong, caring and safe communities.”

Over the past 27 years, employees at the two organizations have raised more than $7 million for United Way. The York Region and York Regional Police campaign has become the top campaign for United Way in the Region and one of the top public-sector campaigns in the GTA.

York Region and York Regional Police work closely with United Way agencies daily to help support critical social services throughout the Region. When one Regional service ends, a United Way agency often continues providing the on-going support required.

“This has been a tough year for everyone, and we know our partner charities are working hard to keep up to meet the needs of our vulnerable residents,” said York Regional Police Chief Jim MacSween. “Donations fuel the programs and agencies that provide this much-needed care and support to victims of domestic violence, people in crisis, those who are homeless and our youth. We are proud to partner with York Region on this important initiative.”

The 2019-2020 United Way campaign highlights include:

  • An employee payroll donation program
  • Numerous employee-driven fundraising events and initiatives (Spring and Holiday Markets, online auctions)

“Our employees give back to our community, year after year, in a big way,” said York Region Chief Administrative Officer Bruce Macgregor. “This long-standing commitment to our culture of caring is just one of the many things that continues to make York Region a top employer in the GTA and across the country.”

Operating in more than 100 communities in Canada, each United Way raises support locally, directly responding to local needs.

The Regional Municipality of York consists of nine local cities and towns and provides a variety of programs and services to 1.2 million residents and 54,000 businesses with 650,000 employees. More information about the Region’s key service areas is available at york.ca/regionalservices
