York Region Transit (YRT) bus operators compete in annual skills competition

Newmarket – The Regional Municipality of York is hosting its 11th Annual York Region Transit (YRT) Bus Roadeo on Sunday, June 3. Highlighting their skills, highly-trained YRT operators will compete in a series of driving challenges to win the Bus Roadeo Grand Champion title and the opportunity to represent York Region at the 2019 American Public Transit Association (APTA) Bus Roadeo in Louisville, Kentucky.

Members of the media are invited to attend a VIP tour of the preliminary qualifying rounds on Monday, May 28 where they can test their skills and learn to navigate and drive through a five-obstacle course in a 40-foot YRT bus with the assistance of a certified YRT trainer.

Approximately 600 YRT staff, contractor staff, bus operators and their families and friends are expected to attend.


The YRT Bus Roadeo is an annual skills competition between YRT bus operators set on an obstacle course. It showcases the excellent driving skills and abilities of our trained bus operators who bring safe, friendly and reliable transit service to York Region customers.

Bus operators must first undergo a week-long skills competition in a series of qualifying events before moving on to the Roadeo Championship day.
